Thiruvananthpuram, Jun 4, 2026: The southwest monsoon officially set in over Kerala on Thursday, marking the beginning of India’s annual rainy season, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed.
The onset of the monsoon is expected to bring widespread rainfall across Kerala and Lakshadweep, with several districts already under weather alerts due to the possibility of heavy to very heavy showers.
Kerala Monsoon Arrival: Orange Alert Issued In 8 Districts
With the southwest monsoon making its onset over Kerala, the state is expected to witness heavy to very heavy rainfall between June 4 and June 9. Some areas could receive between 7 cm and 20 cm of rain during this period, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The weather department has placed eight districts namely Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam and Thrissur under Orange Alert for Thursday, warning of intense rainfall and the possibility of disruptions.
Rainfall activity is expected to remain strong in the coming days, with the focus gradually shifting towards northern Kerala. Districts such as Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod are likely to experience heavy showers later this week as monsoon conditions strengthen across the state.
