St. Agnes College to host national workshop on Manipuri dance

Mangalore, Dec 29, 2011: The Cultural Association of St. Agnes College will host a 5-day national workshop on folk dances of Manipur, sponsored by the Kannada and Culture Department and the UGC, on Jan 12 – 16.

Cultural Association Staff Coordinator Prof. Shubharekha informed journalists at a press conference held at Press Club that the workshop is being organized with the objective of familiarizing students with Indian culture and folklore.

She said that 100 delegates from a wide range of colleges across India will participate in the event. The resources persons will be internationally renowned artistes such as Dr. Darshana Jhavery and group of Mumbai, Ms. Gyaneshwari Devi of Manipur, and Ms. Latasana Devi of Manipur, who will introduce students to a wide range of Manipuri folk and tribal dances.

Further, she said that CM D. V. Sadananda Gowda will inaugurate the workshop at 2:30 p.m. on Jan 12 and that Govinda Karajola, the minister for Kannada and Culture; District-in-charge Minister Krishna J. Palemar; and Vyjayanthi Kashi, the Kuchipudi exponent, will be the guests of honor.

The chief guest of the valedictory ceremony, which will be held on Jan 16 at 3:30 p.m., will be Dr. A. V. Navuda, the retired professor of Hampi University.


Principal Dr. Sr. Prem D’Souza, Student Secretary Shashwathi Jain, Chaithra, and Shruthi were also present.
