Mangalore, Oct 20, 2011: The joint action committee of sand miners in DK has warned that they will protest against any efforts made to curb sand mining in DK. The committee leaders addressed a press conference on Oct 20 Thursday.
Speaking on the occasion, Mayur Ullal said that the sand miners’ permit to mine sand in DK expired on Oct 14, resulting in a steep hike in the price of sand and creating serious problems for common people in the process of constructing houses.
The committee also demanded an effective sand policy for the coastal areas of DK, in keeping with the traditional methods of sand mining followed in DK.
Stating that the members of the association are not involved in illegal mining, he said that they are being unnecessarily harassed by officials who impose fines on them. Stating that licenses to mine sand are renewed on a temporary basis, he said that the sand miners are seeking a permanent solution to this problem.
Satyapal Rai, the president of the Sand Lorry Owners Association, and Jitendra Suvarna, the president of the Boat Employees Organization, were present at the press conference.
