Mangaluru, Jul 17, 2026: A Janata Dal (Secular) study team, constituted to assess the damage caused by the monsoon and natural disasters across Karnataka, visited several rain-affected areas in Dakshina Kannada district on Thursday.
The team was led by S.L. Bhojegowda, MLC and chairman of the JD(S) study committee. He was accompanied by Dakshina Kannada JD(S) district president Jake Madhava Gowda, Youth Wing district president Akshith Suvarna, district general secretary Yogish Shetty Jappu, and other party leaders.
The delegation first visited Nagori, where a recent landslide claimed lives, and inspected the affected area. Bhojegowda met the bereaved families, expressed his condolences, and interacted with local residents to understand the challenges they face during the monsoon, the factors contributing to landslides, and the urgent safety measures required.
Speaking on the occasion, Bhojegowda urged the government to provide immediate compensation, rehabilitation, and essential infrastructure to families affected by natural disasters. He also stressed the need to scientifically identify vulnerable areas and implement permanent measures such as retaining walls, proper drainage systems, and landslide mitigation works.
The study team later visited the Battapady area in Someshwar, where severe coastal erosion has caused extensive damage. The members inspected the destruction to houses, roads, and public property caused by rough sea waves and interacted with local fishermen and residents.
Representatives of Save Battapady, including its president Sukesh G.K. Uchchil, explained that coastal erosion has been worsening every year, leaving residents living in constant fear.
Bhojegowda called on the government to implement scientific and long-term coastal protection measures, expedite the construction of seawalls and other shoreline protection works, and provide adequate compensation to affected families.
Later, the study team met Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner Darshan H.V. and submitted a memorandum highlighting the issues related to the Nagori landslide, Someshwar coastal erosion, and other rain-affected areas in the district.
The delegation discussed the findings from the field visit, the concerns raised by local residents, and the urgent measures required to mitigate the damage. The Deputy Commissioner accepted the memorandum, briefed the team on the steps already taken, and assured them that the remaining issues would be given priority and brought to the attention of the government for necessary action.
Several JD(S) leaders and office-bearers, including State Fishermen’s Wing president Ratnakar Suvarna, working president Iqbal Mulki, and other district and constituency leaders, were present during the visit.
