Mangaluru, Sep 8, 2026: Acting on credible information that undertrial prisoners were using prohibited mobile phones inside the Mangaluru District Prison, city police conducted a surprise raid and search of the jail on the night of September 7.
During the search, police recovered 10 illegally concealed smartphones from nine prisoners housed in the prison’s A-Block.
The prisoners from whom the mobile phones were seized have been identified as Rifath Ali, Ibrahim Khalil, Ashfaq alias Juttu Ashfaq, Arshad, Dawood Parvez, Nazarath Ali, Shifan, Abdul Sadiq and Arfaz.
According to police, the first four prisoners are accused in the Arif murder case reported near Thokkottu. The fifth to eighth prisoners are accused in separate cases related to drug peddling under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The ninth prisoner is an accused in a case registered under the Karnataka Control of Organised Crime Act (KCOCA) at Kankanady Town Police Station.
Based on the information regarding the use of mobile phones by prisoners, Barke police have registered a case under Crime No. 82/2026 under Section 323 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 42 of the Karnataka Prisons Act.
Barke police are continuing their investigation into the use of the seized mobile phones and are also probing how the devices were smuggled into the prison. Further details related to the case are being verified.
