New Delhi, Sep 7, 2026: At least six people were killed and six others injured after a building housing students collapsed in New Delhi on Sunday, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said, according to Reuters.

Gupta said water had accumulated in the basement during ongoing repair work and was linked to the collapse of the old structure.

Six injured people were shifted to hospital, while rescue teams continued searching the debris for possible survivors.

According to local media reports, the building, located in south Delhi near several colleges and universities, comprised a basement and five upper floors and was occupied by students.

Police were searching for the building owner, the reports said.

Building collapses are frequent in India, particularly in densely populated urban areas, where unauthorised construction and weak enforcement of building regulations remain major concerns.

Satya Niketan, located near Delhi University’s South Campus, has a large student population. Eyewitnesses said around 50 students may have been inside the building when it collapsed, while a student at the spot reported hearing cries for help from beneath the rubble.
