Malpe, September 8, 2026: A newborn baby boy who was found abandoned in a lane near a house at Hoode under the jurisdiction of Malpe police station on Sunday morning died despite treatment, police said.

The infant was found at around 6.30 a.m. by Abdul Shukoor of Hoode when he stepped out of his house. The baby, who was naked and lying face down in the lane beside his house, appeared to have been abandoned, and no relatives or guardians were found at the spot.

Shukoor immediately alerted his neighbours. When they checked on the baby, they found that he was alive. The infant had an injury on his face and was bleeding from the mouth. He was rushed to the Udupi Mother and Child Hospital, where he was admitted for treatment.

However, the baby, who was in critical condition, died around 9.30 a.m. despite medical treatment. The body has been kept at the mortuary of the district hospital in Ajjarkad.

Malpe police have registered a case and launched an investigation.

The infant is suspected to have been born only a day earlier. According to the District Child Protection Unit’s Suraksha, the baby is believed to have died due to injuries to the mouth that caused severe bleeding.

Udupi Superintendent of Police Hariram Shankar said the possibility that the newborn was abandoned by migrant workers from North India was being examined. “CCTV footage from the surrounding areas is being checked. A case has been registered and an investigation is underway,” he said.
