Moodbidri, Dec 18, 2011: Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) organized the 72nd All India Inter University Athletic Championship for the first time in DK at Swarajya Maidan, Moodubidri last evening.
The 5-day event was inaugurated with the assistance of Alva’s Education Foundation at Moodubidri. Dr. Shriprakash, the vice chancellor of RGUHS, inaugurated the event by releasing balloons into the air.
Although the event was inaugurated in the evening, the qualifying round had commenced in the morning. The sports torch was lit in Hanuman Temple and brought to Swarjya Maidan in a grand procession. The torch was carried by internationally acclaimed athletes such as Jamaluddin, M. V. Poovamma, Joylin Lobo, Basavaraj Horatti, and others. The procession showcased the cultural greatness of our region, with lambanis, huli veshas, keelu kudures, veeragases, chende teams, and others in the lead.
On the grounds, K. S. Ashok, the athlete, presented the torch to K. M. Binu, the Arjuna award winner. This event was followed by a march past of athletes representing 151 universities all over India. Calicut University, which emerged as the last year, was in the lead. More than 2,500 athletes are participating in the meet. Kathy Vakaria, a student of Bangalore Medical College and a pole vault record holder, received the oath on behalf of all the participants.
MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, MLC Captain Ganesh Karnik, MLA Abhayachandra Jain, Alva’s Foundation Chairman Dr. Mohan Alva, and others were also present.
The qualifying events were held on the first day. Supreeth Raj of Mangalore University, a student of SDM BBM College, qualified for the high jump finals.
Rebecca Jose of Bangalore University, who won the medal at the Youth Commonwealth Games; B. S. Shubha of Mangalore University; and Priyanka Kalagi of Dharwad University qualified for the 100m race.
The toppers in the qualifying rounds were Kerala University and Calicut University.
