Temple History:
With 1,500 years of history, Shasthavu Sri Bhootanatheshwara Temple is among the most ancient places of worship. It is situated in the idyllic surroundings of Mijar village inhabited mainly by the agriculturist community. The triple Shiva Lingam found on a single pedestal in the sanctum sanctorum is a unique feature of the temple.

The temple has rich historical and mythological background. The presiding deity Shasthava is also worshiped as ’Ayyappa Swami’. The three Lingams here represent the presence of Sri Shasthara, his wife Sri Prabhadevi and his son Sri Sathyaki. It is believed by the devotees that by worshiping these deities the devotees can get their wishes fulfilled.

The land where the temple is situated belonged to the Mijar Mundabettu house from time immemorial. Later, the temple lost its property following the introduction of the Land Reforms Act and in due course of time it has reached the dilapidated conditions in absence of proper maintenance.

Renovation and Reconstruction:
Thanks to initiative taken by Sri M Jeevandhar Kumar Hosamane Yedapadavu and support extended by Mudabettu family member Sri Vijayanath Shetty, the temple was renovated with the help of the devotees and the local people. Sri Jeevandhar Kumar donated the lands and served as the president of the Renovation Committee. Members of the local Bhajan troupe Sri Bhootanatheshwara Bhajana Mandali have strived day and night in the temple renovation and reconstruction work.

The temple structure has been reconstructed at the cost of Rs 1.50 crore in accordance with the principles of ancient Kshethra Vasthu (temple architecture). Due care has been taken to see that the temple structure should not lose the traditional architectural beauty, even though a modern touch is given to suit the needs of the modern times.

The New Structure:
The entire sanctum sanctorum is built using granite stone (Shile). The new pavement of the temple has added to the beauty of the structure. Sri Krishnaraja Thantri of Sri Kshethra Kudupu has provided guidance in Vasthu related matters. Sri B Padmanabha Rai and Sri Y B Pramukh Rai, the eminent engineers of Mangalore have served as the architects. The temple sculpture expert Sri M Mani Karkala, Baburaja Achari, Darushilpi Uduma, Kasaragod, contractors Mesthri Janardhana Gowda and Ananda Gowda have strived to see that the temple structure was rebuilt in most attractive manner.

Modern Touch:
Construction of a temple is a special responsibility as it has to inspire future generations for a long time. Hence no effort has been spared to see that the best materials are used in temple construction. As a modern touch to the ancient temple the upper roof has been covered with world-class quality copper plates imported from Germany. Known as ‘Patina Copper’, it is green in natural colour. Special quality Pink marble from Udaipur has been used for flooring and the Pauli Gopuram has been covered with special Thailand tiles. It for the first time in India and Asia that Patina Copper is used in a temple. In addition, 5 feet Mangaladeepa and a Bell weighing 52 kgs made of Mishraloha have added to the beauty of the temple. The scheme includes landscaping in the temple premises so that the visitors can relax, enjoy the beauty and get a soothing and rejuvenating experience filled with positive thoughts and pleasant feeling.

Cultural Programmes:
Cultural shows by renowned professional artists and local troupes will be held in connection with the celebrations. Mime and Mimicry show by Radio Mirchi 98.3 FM RJ Vinayak and troupe, Tunga Bhadra, stage play by artiste Surendra Kumar Kalathrapade, Bharatanatyam and musical programme by the artistes of Shruthi Laya Kala Kendra, Rasamanjari by Gurukiran and troupe, Tulu comedy drama ’Kutumba’ by eminent stage artist Vijay Kumar Kodialbail are some of the important cultural events to be held on the occasion.

Appeal to Preserve our Traditions and Heritage:
Brahma Kalashabhisheka is not merely a religious event, but it is occasion that reflects the rich cultural and traditional heritage of Tulu Nadu. Keeping this in mind the celebration committee requests all people who wish to witness the grand occasion from different parts of the region to attend the programme wearing the traditional Tulu attire and avoid wearing any modern dress.
The devotees attending the main programme on May 19 will have a rare opportunity to win attractive prizes for best traditional attire and attitude. Separate prizes will be given to men, women and children to encourage them to wear traditional dress.

Free Transportation:
Free transportation facility has been arranged for the devotees arriving at the temple from Yedapavu to Mangalore and Moodabidri. Devotees are assured of return transport after the conclusion of the cultural programme every night.

Future Plans:
Sri Vijaynath Shetty in association with others has plans to implement several schemes for the development of the village. A few of the projects tentatively planned are (1) Building a school, (2) Museum, (3) Wedding Hall, (4) Organising cultural events every year, (5) Local sports tournament, (6) annual cricket tournament, (7) Reviving the Kambala sport (8) Garden of medicinal plants and (9) Old age home.
