Udupi, July 12, 2023: Udupi witnessed a unique protest as tipplers gathered at Chittaranjan Circle to voice their demands and call on the government to provide free liquor. Organized by the Udupi District Civic Committee, led by Nithyananda Olakadu, the protest aimed to draw attention to the recent 20 per cent increase in liquor prices announced in the government’s budget.
The protesters’ demand stems from the fact that the government’s free liquor scheme is funded through excise taxes. The protesters advocated for either a reduction in alcohol prices or the provision of free large (90ml) servings of liquor in the morning and evening.
Highlighting their grievances, the protesters emphasized that if the government failed to address their demands, they would consider pushing for a complete ban on breweries. They argued that the funds spent on alcohol could be better utilized to support their families and meet their basic needs, such as facilitating visits to temples with their wives and children.
The protesters received recognition from the Udupi District Civic Committee, who paid their respects by garlanding them and conducting religious rituals (pooja) for the alcohol bottles as a symbol of homage.
