Bantwal, Oct 24, 2025: A major disaster was averted in Anantadi village, Vittal, on Wednesday night thanks to the quick thinking of a young man who acted swiftly after a gas leak triggered a fire at his home. Several household items, electrical appliances, and a two-wheeler were damaged in the incident.

The mishap occurred around 9:45 p.m. at Hirthandabailu near Babanakatte when a new gas cylinder was being installed. Jayaraj, who was present with his mother Sushila, sustained burns on his face and hands while attempting to control the situation.

According to reports, the fire broke out after gas began leaking from the regulator connection of the new cylinder. Acting courageously, Jayaraj carried the burning cylinder out of the house, preventing the flames from spreading further.

Neighbor Venkappa Poojary rushed to the spot and helped extinguish the fire by covering the burning cylinder with a wet gunny sack, successfully containing the situation before it could escalate.

The fire damaged several household items, electrical appliances, doors, windows, and a two-wheeler. Officials later found that the regulator had been installed without a washer, which caused the leakage and fire. Authorities noted that Jayaraj’s timely action prevented a possible explosion.

A complaint has been registered at the Vittal Police Station. Anantadi Gram Panchayat President Sujatha, former presidents Ganesh, Sanath Kumar Rai, Ganesh Bantrinj, Umesh Nedyar, village accountant, and Karunakar Shetty from the Bantwal Karinjashwara Gas Agency visited the site and assured relief measures to the affected family.
