Udupi, April 5, 2026: A Miyawaki forest project named after cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar was launched on the land of K. Mahesh Shenoy in Katapadi, with the aim of promoting environmental conservation and creating a green ecosystem.

The project was inaugurated in the presence of Sudhir Naik, President of Rising Rose Cricket Australia, along with Australian cricket coaches Richard Clifton, Jason Cox, and Mitch Davey.

Addressing the gathering, Mahesh Shenoy said the initiative would contribute to better health by ensuring clean air and a pollution-free environment. He emphasised the need for environmental protection in the face of rising pollution levels.

Under the project, several native plant species will be planted, and the area is expected to transform into a dense forest within the next two to three years. Steps are also being taken to improve soil quality.

Explaining the concept, Shenoy said the Miyawaki method enables rapid forest growth in small spaces, making it ideal for urban areas. The forest is expected to support biodiversity by providing shelter for birds and small animals, while also improving air quality. The plantation is being developed on a 30-cent plot in the shape of a cricket bat to inspire environmental awareness among youth.

He added that the project leverages the widespread popularity of cricket across all age groups to promote ecological responsibility, hence naming the forest after Sachin Tendulkar.

Dr. Ganesh Pai, environmentalist Premanand Kalmadi, Ramesh Kini, Sharavathi Ravi Raj, Avinash Kamat, Sudhakar Kini and others were present.
