Mangalore, Nov 27, 2011: Addressing the gathering after launching the project of constructing an 8.37 acre pond in Kavoor, District-in-charge Minister Krishna J. Palemar said that he will work toward enacting a law to protect and preserve all the ponds in the state. 


Speaking about the Kavoor pond, he said that it forms part of the small irrigation department under the CM’s pond renovation programme of 2011 – 12 and will cost Rs. 1 crore. He said that 122 ponds in DK and 10 ponds within MCC limits are earmarked for development.

Further, he said that the work has already commenced in Karinjeshwar and Kavoor and includes the removal of silt, reinforcement of weak borders, strengthening of barricades, and so on. During the monsoons, a 600m pipeline will be provided to facilitate flow of water to different valleys. A stop-wall around 49.80m in length will also be set up, he informed. 


Speaking about the importance of ponds, he said that public awareness of water conservation should be created, adding that ponds assist fisheries and agriculture.
