Over 500 children participated in Orphanage Olympics at Mijar

Mangalore, Dec 2, 2013: About 500 children belonging to 8 orphanages in and around Mangalore participated in ‘Orphanage Olympics’, a unique sporting event organized by the Rotary Club Mangalore Central in association with Shastavu Sri Bhoothanatheshwara Temple Trust on Sunday, 1st December.

Sri K. Amarnath Shetty, former minister, inaugurated the event, which was held at Shastavu Sri Bhoothanatheshwara Temple premises at Badaga Yedapadavu, Mijar, Mangalore. Commending the organizers, Shetty said, “Orphanage Olympics is a very meaningful programme organized by Rotary Club and temple co-ordinator Sri Vijaynath Vittal Shetty with the objective of instilling confidence among the orphan children and making them feel special and care for.”

A prestigious social service project started by Rotary Club in the year 1996, Annual Orphanage Olympics is now entering 15th year. The 15th Annual Orphanage Olympics 2013 involved different sports activities in the morning session and cultural competitions during afternoon session. The sporting activities included Back Balloon Race, Tyre Race, Ball Throw, Tappangai, Marshy Field Race, Filling Water, Tug-Of-War etc. ‘Culture of DK District’ was the theme for the cultural competitions. In addition to prizes to the winners, all children were given gift hampers.

Sri Pratapsimha Nayak, District BJP President who was present as a chief guest, said it was a welcome move on the part of the organizers in arranging Orphanage Olympics which gave the children an opportunity to exhibit their sporting talents.

In his address, Sri Vijaynath Vittal Shetty, Chief Co-ordinator of Sri Shastavu Bhoothanatheshwara Temple, said after successfully conducting village games and various other events aimed at rekindling folk glory, the Temple has been able to host the Orphanage Olympics with the co-operation of Rotary Club.

Rtn. Dr. Bhaskar, (District Governor Elect RI Dist. 3180), Dr. B. Devadas Rai,  President of the Organizing Committee, Dr Sureshchandra Shetty, President of Bantwal IMA and Bhasker Arasa, Media Advisor were also present. Rajgopal Rai, President of Rotary Club Mangalore Central welcomed the gathering. Santosh Shet, Club Secretary, proposed the vote of thanks.
