Fishing resumes along Karnataka coast as two-month monsoon ban ends

Mangaluru/Malpe, Aug 1, 2026: Fishing activities will resume from August 1 along the Karnataka coast after the two-month monsoon fishing ban imposed to protect fish breeding season.

Preparations have been underway for the past week, with fishing boats undergoing repairs, stocking up on ice and getting ready to head into the deep sea.

Dakshina Kannada Fisheries Department Deputy Director Dileep said that around 70 to 100 boats are expected to venture into the sea on the first day.

Mangaluru fishermen’s leader Mohan Bengre said that nearly 400 deep-sea trawlers are ready to resume operations. However, he cautioned that adverse weather conditions could affect fishing activities.

“There are strong winds and rough sea conditions. If the weather remains the same, trawling may not be possible,” he said.

He added that purse seine fishing boats are expected to begin operations on August 7, after the traditional sea worship ceremony. However, the final decision will depend on prevailing weather conditions.

In Malpe, preparations have also been completed for the resumption of fishing. As part of the arrangements, cleaning work was carried out at the harbour on Friday. Boats will head out to sea in phases over the coming days.
