Heavy rain batters Dakshina Kannada; Netravathi River swells, normal life disrupted

Mangaluru, Aug 1, 2026: Heavy rain that began across Dakshina Kannada district on Friday night continued unabated on Saturday, disrupting normal life in several parts of the district.

Persistent downpours since early morning led to waterlogging on roads, causing severe inconvenience to motorists and office-goers. Traffic movement was affected at several locations as vehicles struggled to navigate flooded stretches.

Considering the intensity of the rainfall and the safety of students, Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner H.V. Darshan declared a holiday on Saturday (August 1) for all anganwadi centres, government, aided and private primary and high schools, as well as pre-university colleges across the district. The holiday was also extended to all ITI and diploma colleges.

Heavy showers continued throughout the morning, resulting in water accumulation in many parts of Mangaluru city and disrupting vehicular movement. Meanwhile, the water level in the Nethravathi River has risen due to incessant rainfall, prompting authorities to advise residents living along the riverbanks to remain alert and take necessary precautions.

Flooding in Belthangady

Heavy rain since Saturday morning has also caused flooding in parts of Belthangady taluk. Water from the river has entered low-lying areas, inundating roads and agricultural fields. Several roads resembled streams as floodwaters spread across the region.

In some places, cars and two-wheelers were stranded after getting submerged in water, leaving owners with no option but to push their vehicles as engines failed to start.
