Mangalore, Dec 28, 2011: The ’Outstanding Manager Award’ conferred on Dr Olinda Periera, Roshni Nilaya School of Social Work Founder Principal and social worker  by Vice Chancellor of Mangalore University in Mangalore on December 28, 2011.


Olinda PereiraRoshni Nilaya School of Social Work Founder Principal and social worker Dr Olinda Periera requested the Mangalore University Vice Chancellor to introduce specialisation course in gerontology (study of diseases and problems pertaining to the elderly) in the University and the colleges under the varsity.

She was speaking after receiving Outstanding Manager Award - 2011 conferred on her by the Mangalore Management Association, at SDM College of Business Management in Mangalore on Wednesday. Dr Periera who is currently working for the elderly under Vishwas Trust said that there is an immense need for geriatrician in today’s society. Considering the fact that the problems of elderly is increasing day by day, more number of medical colleges should come up with the specialisation course on gerontology, she said.

“Though today’s India belongs to the youth, with over 60 per cent of population belonging to young generation, the scenario will be vice versa in next two or three decades, when the majority of the population will be old. It is the right time for us to prepare to face the future challenges,” she said.

She also insisted on the need for the elderly to live a peaceful life and invite the death with dignity. Substantiating the same, she said there should be a law which allows the elderly to die with honour.

“There should be a law which enables the Right to Dignified Death on the lines of  the Right to Education and the Right to Information,” said Dr Olinda.

Felicitating the octogenarian, Mangalore University Vice Chancellor Dr T C Shivashankara Murthy congratulated MMA for felicitating a woman achiever for the first time in the Association’s history. He said it was an honour to the teaching community, that a visionary teacher like Dr  Olinda Periera was felicitated.

Putting forth his views on the educational scenario in India, the VC said that India could achieve in the field of education only with the effective implementation of free and compulsory primary education, dynamic secondary education and moderate higher education.

The Mangalore Management Association President T G Shenoy, Secretary Lohidas, SDM College of Business Management Principal Dr Devaraj and others were present.
