Organizations condemn government’s apathetic attitude towards poor

Mangalore, Nov 8, 2011: A number of organizations, including NITUC, BMS, HMS, AITUC, and CITU, organized a jail bharo protest in front of the postal headquarters in Mangalore today. 


CPI (M) District Secretary B. Madhava said that the state government has created a number of problems such as unemployment, price hikes, and others to harass the working classes. Accusing the government of negligence, he said that petrol prices have been hiked 17 times after the union government came to power.

Condemning the statements made by Montek Singh Ahluwalia, the deputy chairman of the Planning Commission, he said that commodities are not sold at different rates for the rich and the poor, owing to which the government must raise the wages of working class people to Rs. 10,000 per month. 


Accusing the government of not being interested in the welfare of the common people, he said that the government is encouraging contract system in Karnataka without increasing minimum wages.


Assuring the audience that CITU is a party of the poor and not a political party, Vishwanath Shetty of BMS said that people get a meager pension of Rs. 1,500 irrespective of their pay scale. 


B. Shekar of AITUC warned the government that it will not be elected to power at the next elections if it continues its apathetic attitude toward the people. 


AITUC Secretary Suresh, Vasanth Achary of CPIM, and many others were also present. 


The protestors were later taken by police van and a private bus to the jail.
