Mangaluru, July 10, 2025: Fire stations, at a cost of ₹3 crore, will be built in each of Kadaba and Mulky in Dakshina Kannada, Home Minister G. Parameshwara said in Mangaluru on Wednesday.
Speaking after laying the foundation stone for a new fire station in Phajir Kairangala under Mangaluru Assembly constituency, Mr. Parameshwara said there were 220 fire stations across the State. The State government was making efforts to build a fire station in every taluk headquarters as recommended by the National Fire Advisory Council. The State needed an additional 40 fire stations, which will be built in phases. More fire stations were needed in the Coastal and Malnad regions. These regions were witnessing a greater number of landslides, landslips and other natural calamities, he said.
Following the directions by the Centre, the State government was phasing out fire tenders and other public vehicles that were older than 15 years. “We sought changes in the norms citing that the vehicles have not covered even 1,000 km. As it was rejected, the government is phasing out old public vehicles.”
The Minister said Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has sanctioned ₹50 crore to the Home Department for buying new vehicles for fire and emergency services, police, prison and other departments coming under Home Ministry.
The Fire and Emergency Services Department was importing 90-meter-high ladders and other state-of-art machinery for fire stations in Bengaluru and other parts the State to tackle fire in high rise buildings. The government was keen on upgrading fire-fighting infrastructure in Mangaluru region that has New Mangaluru Port, chemical industries and silos to stock petroleum products, the Minister said.
U.T. Khader, Assembly Speaker and Mangaluru MLA, said that having a fire station in Phajir Kairangala was a long-pending demand in the constituency. The new fire station is expected to be ready in a year. This new station will effectively serve the nooks and corners of the constituency.
Deputy Director (Technical), Fire and Emergency Services, Eshwar Naik and Chief Fire Officer B.M. Thirumalesh also spoke.
