Mangaluru, May 31, 2026: After years of anticipation, the dream of a Vande Bharat Express connecting Bengaluru with Karnataka’s coastal region is finally on track to become a reality. The Indian Railways has approved the much-awaited service and scheduled a trial run on June 3, raising hopes of faster and more comfortable travel between the state capital and the coast.
For residents, business communities, students and tourists who regularly travel between Bengaluru and Mangaluru, the announcement marks a significant milestone. The service is expected to strengthen economic ties between the two regions while providing a major boost to tourism, trade and commerce.

According to the provisional schedule released by the Railways, the eight-coach Vande Bharat train will depart from Yeshwantpur in Bengaluru at 6 a.m. and arrive at Mangaluru Central at 2.40 p.m., completing the journey in about 8 hours and 40 minutes.
The trial run will be more than a ceremonial journey. Senior railway officials, engineers and technical experts will be on board to assess the train’s performance under real operating conditions. The exercise comes in the wake of extensive infrastructure upgrades, including track doubling and electrification of the challenging Subrahmanya Road section, one of the most difficult stretches on the Bengaluru-Mangaluru railway corridor.
Testing the Ghat Challenge
The Western Ghats section between Sakleshpur and Subrahmanya Road has long been considered one of the most scenic yet operationally demanding railway routes in the country. During the trial run, railway authorities will closely monitor the train’s speed, braking systems, signalling, stability and overall efficiency through tunnels, curves and steep gradients.
Although the Vande Bharat train is capable of running at speeds of around 100 kmph on this route, speed restrictions in the ghat sections will be necessary to ensure safety and operational reliability.
Railway sources said every parameter required for commercial operations will be evaluated during the trial. If the tests are successful, passenger services could begin soon after the necessary approvals are obtained.
Route and Schedule
As per the provisional timetable, the train will stop at four stations en route to Mangaluru. It will reach Hassan at 9 a.m., Sakleshpur at 9.55 a.m., Subrahmanya Road at 12.30 p.m. and Padil at 2 p.m. before arriving at Mangaluru Central at 2.40 p.m.
On the return journey, the train will leave Mangaluru Central at 2.45 p.m. and arrive in Bengaluru at 11 p.m., halting at Padil, Subrahmanya Road, Sakleshpur and Hassan.
Railway officials have clarified that the timetable is provisional and may undergo changes before commercial operations commence.
Long-Pending Demand Finally Materialises
The demand for a Vande Bharat service connecting Coastal Karnataka with Bengaluru has been growing steadily over the years. Frequent travellers have long sought a faster alternative to existing express trains, particularly given the region’s growing importance as an educational, healthcare, industrial and tourism hub.
While railway authorities and political leaders had repeatedly indicated that the proposal was under consideration, the project had remained in the announcement stage. The approval of the trial run now signals that the service has moved beyond the planning phase.
Karnataka currently operates 12 Vande Bharat services, and the addition of the Bengaluru-Mangaluru route is expected to further strengthen the state’s high-speed rail network.
For Coastal Karnataka, the trial run represents more than just a new train service. It symbolises improved connectivity, enhanced economic opportunities and a long-awaited transportation upgrade that could transform travel between the coast and the state capital. If all goes according to plan, June 3 may well be remembered as the day a decades-old aspiration finally began its journey toward reality.
