New Delhi, May 31, 2026: Former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has alleged that her nephew and Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee sustained serious injuries, including blood clots in his chest, after being attacked by a crowd in Sonarpur, South 24 Parganas.

The incident occurred on Saturday when Abhishek Banerjee visited party workers affected by post-election violence. He was allegedly heckled, pelted with eggs and stones, and physically assaulted by protesters raising slogans against him.
Mamata Banerjee claimed that a helmet placed on Abhishek’s head at a critical moment may have saved his life. She said he suffered injuries to his chest, ribs, face, neck, and back and was advised to undergo multiple medical tests after being taken to a private hospital.
The Trinamool Congress chief also alleged that pressure was exerted on hospitals and doctors regarding his treatment and questioned the security arrangements despite police being informed in advance about the visit. She further accused outsiders of being brought in to trigger violence.
Abhishek Banerjee blamed the BJP for orchestrating the attack, describing it as a politically motivated act. In response, BJP leader Keya Ghosh dismissed the allegations, calling the incident a consequence of the Trinamool Congress’s actions over the past 15 years.
The incident has intensified political tensions in West Bengal, with both parties trading charges over responsibility for the violence.
