Mangaluru, May 31, 2026: Thannirbhavi Blue Flag Beach came alive with thrilling wave-riding action as surfers from across the country competed in the 7th Indian Open of Surfing, transforming the coastline into a vibrant sporting arena.
The national championship has attracted participants from Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Goa and Maharashtra, with surfers showcasing exceptional skill, balance and control while navigating the powerful waves of the Arabian Sea.

Launched in 2016, the Indian Open of Surfing has grown into one of India’s premier surfing events. This year’s edition holds added significance as it serves as a selection platform for surfers aspiring to represent the country at the Asian Games, drawing some of India’s top surfing talent to Mangaluru.
Surfing, a globally recognized water sport with roots in Hawaii, requires athletes to ride ocean waves on specially designed boards while performing technical maneuvers. Competitors are judged on wave selection, speed, control, style and the difficulty of their moves. High-scoring maneuvers include turns, cutbacks, snaps and aerial tricks.
Apart from the Open Men’s and Women’s categories, the championship also features junior divisions for Under-14, Under-16 and Under-18 participants, reflecting efforts to nurture emerging talent and strengthen India’s surfing ecosystem.
Organizers said the event also serves as a platform for surfers from different regions to exchange experiences and foster a stronger sporting community. With growing participation and increasing recognition, surfing continues to gain momentum as an emerging mainstream sport in India.
