Mangalore, Oct 28, 2012: The Muslim community of Mangalore celebrated Bakrid grandly. Dressed in their immaculate white clothes, they visited local mosques in large numbers, and offered prayers. Thousands of Muslims arrived at the major Idgah Mosque on Light House Hill Road and offered prayers.
Muslims consider Bakrid, also referred to as Eid-ul-Adha, as a festival of sacrifice. They recall the willingness of Ibrahim to sacrifice his own son in obedience to Allah. Ibrahim, who sacrificed his own son on Mount Mina near Mecca, later discovers that Allah had spared his son and taken the life of a goat instead.
Muslims commemorate this sacrifice by sacrificing a goat, owing to which the festival is called “Bakr-id.” The meat of the goat is then distributed among family members and friends.
Eid is observed on the 10th day of Dhu’l Hijja, as per the Islamic calendar.
