Mangalore, Nov 7, 2011 : The Muslim community of Mangalore is celebrating Bakrid today, Nov 7. Hundreds of Muslims went to various mosques across Mangalore, dressed traditionally.
The largest gathering was at Idgah Mosque on Light House Hill Road; thousands of Muslims gathered and offered prayers at this mosque.
Bakrid, also referred to as Eid-ul-Adha, is a festival of sacrifice, commemorating Ismail’s willingness to sacrifice his own son to Allah at an altar on Mount Mina, Mecca. Pleased with Ibrahim, Allah spared his son and accepted a goat instead.
Muslim devotees sacrifice a goat on this day, owing to which the day is called Bakr-id, and distribute its meat among friends and family members. The feast is just before the Haj pilgrimage. Sweets and other delicacies are also prepared on this day. The feast arrives on the 10th day of Dhu’l Hijja, according to the Muslim calendar.
