Mangalore, Oct 30, 2012: Addressing reporters in his office today, SP Abhishek Goyal said that the police have arrested Kamaruddin (25) and Mohammed Rafique (33) for murdering Baby Thomas and his wife Mary in their house in Undila at Kodimbala in Puttur.
Stating that the CPI Puttur (rural) had investigated the case, Mr. Goyal said that, when interrogated by the police, the arrested confessed that they were working as construction laborers for Thomas and had become friendly with him. They also had an eye on the valuables in their house and had been planning to murder the couple for the past 3 months.

On September 25, they visited Thomas’ house at midnight, woke him up, and asked him to drop them home in his car as their motorbike had broken down. At Bolur Cross, they made him stop the car and killed him. They stole his gold chain, drove back the car along with the dead body, and killed his wife Mary. They then stole her gold earrings and broke open the cupboards of the house to steal money and other valuables. Mr. Goyal said that the murder weapon and the motorbike have been found, but the jewelry stolen and the mobile phones are yet to be found.
The murderers used to gamble and needed a lot of money. However, they committed the crime only for money and gold and did not have any other motive. They also do not have any past criminal record, said Mr. Goyal.
Sowjanya Rape and Murder Case
Speaking about the rape and murder of 17-year-old Sowjanya of Dharmasthala, Mr. Goyal said that Santhosh Rao had indeed raped the girl, but the police are still waiting for the FSLreport, which will confirm his guilt.
He also said that he has no objection to handing over the investigation to the COD or the CID if the family requests it. He said that the family only has to write a letter requesting handing over the investigation to the COD or the CID and the police will transfer the case.
More Policemen Required
Mr. Goyal said that he has written to the home ministry and the higher authorities to recruit more police officers, especially in Naxal-infested zones.
He said that the police department has submitted a proposal requesting recruitment of more police officers in Punjalkatte, Belthangady, and Venur, adding that a special request has been made for one police sub inspector, two assistant sub inspectors, 25 constables, and 6 head constables for each of these police stations.
The proposal also includes a request for 24 special officers to serve on a temporary basis in these areas, adding that Malekudiyas and members of other local tribal communities can also be employed. Revealing statistics, he said that there are 133 vacancies in the DK police department.
