Mangalore/Udupi, June 19, 2012: The intense monsoons have destroyed several houses in DK and Udupi.
In DK, three families who lived along the banks of River Gurupura were taken to a safe place because their houses were partially damaged in an artificial flood caused when the retention wall of a vented dam that is under construction in Maravoor collapsed.
Urwa Stores also experienced artificial flooding because of blocked storm water drains on Tuesday morning. As a result, a compound wall collapsed causing heavy financial loss for the owner.
In Pachchanady, a house was partly destroyed, but the two people who lived in it escaped unhurt. Yogendra, the owner of the house, said that he has suffered a loss of Rs. 60,000.
In Udupi, seven houses were damaged, two people were injured, and a banana plantation was completely destroyed because of the rains and the winds.
According to the Udupi taluk office, Sheena Poojary, son of Manjayya Poojary, was injured when a wire fell from an electric pole on his feet. He is now in a private hospital in Manipal.
Several houses located close to places where the four-lane work was in progress were flooded, and people in places such as Muloor, Yermal, Kaup, Uchila, Hejamady, Katapady, Kaup, and other places were greatly inconvenienced.
In Tenka, Shaba Beary’s house was damaged, causing him a loss of Rs. 14,000. Rama Poojary’s banana plantation was destroyed because of heavy rain and wind in Shiriyar, causing a loss of Rs. 15,000.
According to the Kundapur taluk office, Babu Mogaveera’s house was damaged when a tree fell on it, causing loss of Rs. 50,000. In Koteshwar, the tiles were blown off the roof of a house belonging to Saroja Devadiga, causing a loss of Rs. 5,000. Kamala Poojarthi’s house was partly damaged, causing an estimated loss of Rs. 5,000. In Kumbashi, Siddique Moideen’s well was damaged, causing an estimated loss of Rs. 25,000.
