Mangalore, Sep 12, 2013: Renowned Mumbai based Journalist and writer Kalpana Sharma said that there is necessity to change the mindset of men and their perspective of looking women in the form of a commodity.
She was addressing after inaugurating the UGC-sponsored national conference titled ‘Education and Women Empowerment’ organized by St Ann’s College of Education in association with state department of women and child development, held at St Ann’s College on September 12, Thursday.
She also said that today whole country is discussing about the rape of physiotherapy student in Delhi and of a photojournalist in Mumbai, hence the phrase ‘women empowerment’ remains just as a rule.
The accused involved in the sexual assaults against women are mostly teenagers. This is how the young boys are brought up in the society. According to the studies, men who feel that they have sexual power, commit violence against women. Women in the present generation have contributed a lot to the society in various fields, but such kinds of incidents are hindering their self confidence, she said.
Delivering the key note address, Ammu Joseph, Bangalore based independent journalist and writer said that the situation in DK is different in relation to higher literacy rates among women in the state.
She also said that the patriarchal mindsets are common in DK when read about the moral policing taking place in past few years. She said that she may not be convinced that education leads to women empowerment, because Dowry deaths are the main issues of gender based violence, where the educated girls get tortured by their in laws and education does not help in any way.
