Mangaluru, May 7, 2026: In view of the rising temperatures in the district, a special 10-bed heatstroke treatment unit has been set up on the fifth floor of the new surgical block at Wenlock Hospital.

Doctors said symptoms of heatstroke include high body temperature, confusion, slurred speech and loss of consciousness. In case of emergency, the public can immediately call 108 ambulance services.

Heatstroke is a life-threatening condition and requires immediate medical attention. Affected persons should be shifted to a shaded area, an air-conditioned room or any cool place. Rapid cooling is essential. If possible, the person should be immersed in ice water or placed in a tub of cold water.

Authorities advised several cooling methods such as spraying water on the body, using a garden hose, or covering the person with towels or sheets soaked in cold water. Ice packs or cold wet cloths should be placed on the armpits, neck, back and groin area. Fans may also be used to help cool the body through evaporation.

If the person is conscious, cold water or electrolyte drinks may be given. Alcohol and caffeinated drinks should be avoided. Tight or heavy clothing should be loosened.

The hospital also issued preventive guidelines to avoid heatstroke. People have been advised to drink plenty of fluids such as water, tender coconut water and ORS throughout the day, even if they are not thirsty. Outdoor activities should be limited or avoided between 11 am and 4 pm. Wearing light-coloured, loose cotton clothing and gradually increasing exposure to sunlight to help the body adapt to heat have also been recommended.

People have been cautioned never to leave children, elderly persons or pets inside parked vehicles, as temperatures can become fatal within minutes. Those working or exercising outdoors should take frequent breaks in the shade. Special care should be given to elderly people and those suffering from chronic illnesses.

Warning signs of heatstroke include confusion, slurred speech, unconsciousness, hot or dry skin, excessive sweating, rapid heartbeat, cold or clammy skin, dizziness, fainting, weak pulse and nausea.

Hospital authorities stated that heat exhaustion should be treated immediately by moving the person to a cool place, giving water and allowing rest, which can help prevent heatstroke. If anyone collapses in the heat with confusion and high fever, the public has been advised to immediately contact Wenlock Hospital and begin cooling measures on the spot.

For more information, the public may contact the helpline numbers: 7483035127, 8217662885, 9945927253, and 9167607879, according to a statement issued by the Wenlock Hospital superintendent.
