Mangalore, Feb 21: MSNM Besant Institute of Post Graduation Studies organized the Mangalore Marathon 2010 to create public awareness about cancer. More than 500 runners from all over DK, Bangalore, and Mysore participated in this event, which was held on Feb 21, Sunday.

Dr A S Rao inaugurated the event in the presence of Assistant Commissioner Prabhulinga Kavalikatti, Director of MSNM Besant College Manel Anappa Nayak, and Kudpi Jagadeesh Shenoy. 

The runners covered a distance of 6 kilometers along the main roads in Mangalore. Their T-shirts, banners, and handbills attracted the people, who cheered them all the way. Alva’s College bagged the largest number of prizes. 

The prize distribution ceremony was organized at Canara High School, Dongerkery. Mayor Shankar Bhat, Registrar-in-charge of Yenepoya University Dr. Shankar Bhat, and President of Women’s Education Trust Kudupi Jagadeesh Shenoy distributed the prizes. 

The first  prize in the women’s section was bagged by Tippavva Sannakki from Teresian College, Mysore. The first prize in the men’s section was bagged by Jaya H T from Alva’s College, Moodubidri. They received a cash award of Rs 40,000 each. Smita C of Maharani College, Mysore and Shahanawaz of Alva’s College, Moodubidri bagged the second prize of Rs 20,000 each. Shankar A T and Mamatha K C of Alva’s College won the third prize of Rs 10,000 each. Each participant received a consolation prize of Rs 1000.

Senior citizens who had participated in the marathon were felicitated during this occasion. The senior citizens who had participated in the men’s section were Ashok Kotekar, Raveendra Shenoy, Mohammed Guthigar, and Krishnappy Shenoy. The senior citizens who participated in the women’s section were Crystal Vaz, Mangala Shenoy, and Bharathi.
