Mangaluru, Apr 16, 2026: Karnataka Legislative Assembly Speaker U T Khader announced that the government has approved a major infrastructure project worth around ₹300 crore to install underground MESCOM cables across Mangaluru City Corporation, Ullal City Municipality and Someshwara Town Municipality.
Addressing a press conference at the MESCOM office on Wednesday, Khader said the project will be implemented shortly. Within Ullal municipal limits, the underground cabling work alone is estimated at ₹186.45 crore. Similar works will also be carried out in the Someshwara municipal area.
He further said that a proposal has been submitted to ensure a permanent solution to coastal erosion in Ullal, adding that pending works in erosion-affected areas have now been completed.
In another development, Khader said a new site has been sanctioned for an ACP office complex. The facility, to be built at a cost of ₹20 crore, will house the ACP office, traffic police office and an AI-based cyber centre under one roof.
Officials said the underground cabling project is aimed at improving the city’s aesthetics and addressing issues caused by overhead electric wires in residential areas. The cables will be laid at a depth of 1.5 metres and are expected to have a lifespan of up to 25 years.
MESCOM chairman Harish Kumar, managing director Jayakumar and MUDA chairman Sadashiva Ullal were present at the press meet.
