Mangaluru: Prohibitory orders in city after murder of Suhas Shetty

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru, May 2, 2025: The city witnessed a bandh-like situation on Friday following the murder of rowdy-sheeter Suhas Shetty in Bajpe on Thursday night. Private buses have suspended operations in response to a call for a district bandh by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad in Dakshina Kannada. Most shops and commercial establishments remained shut, with reports suggesting that some, which initially opened in the morning, were forcibly closed.

City Police Commissioner Anupam Agarwal

City Police Commissioner Anupam Agarwal has issued an order enforcing Prohibitory orders under Section 163 in the city from May 2 to 6 as a precautionary measure in the wake of the murder of rowdy sheeter Suhas Shetty at Kinnipadavu in Bajpe.

People are barred from protesting or moving around in groups when the prohibitory order is in place from May 2 at 6 am to May 6, 6 am.

Despite the suspension of bus services, some private vehicles were seen plying. However, the lack of public transport has left the city largely paralyzed.

To maintain law and order, police personnel have been deployed in large numbers across key areas in the city and its outskirts. Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) for Law and Order, R. Hitendra, arrived in Mangaluru to monitor the situation. Meanwhile, reports of stone pelting on buses and assaults on individuals have surfaced, further escalating concerns.

The suspension of bus services has caused significant inconvenience to passengers at the KSRTC bus stand. Students from areas such as Mulki, Udupi, and Kundapur, who had traveled to the city for college, were left stranded as colleges remained closed due to the bandh. Many passengers expressed their frustration and distress over the lack of transport options.

City Police Commissioner Anupam Agarwal has issued prohibitory orders under Section 144, effective from May 2 to May 6, to prevent any untoward incidents. The orders ban protests and gatherings of five or more people within the Commissionerate limits. The restrictions will remain in place until 6 AM on May 6.

According to Police Commissioner Anupam Agarwal, Suhas Shetty was the prime accused in the 2022 Fazil murder case and had been involved in two murder cases. The incident occurred between 8:30 PM and 8:40 PM on Thursday at Kinnikambala in the Bajpe Police Station limits. Suhas Shetty was traveling with his friends in an Innova car when two vehicles intercepted them. Initially, a goods vehicle attacked their car, followed by assailants from a Swift car who attacked Suhas with lethal weapons. “The attackers targeted Suhas Shetty specifically,” said the Commissioner.

Suhas was rushed to A.J. Hospital in Mangaluru but was declared dead upon arrival. Two of his friends, who sustained injuries during the attack, were also admitted to the hospital.

Commissioner Agarwal revealed that Suhas was released on bail a year ago and had been under police surveillance. “We have reviewed video footage of the incident and are taking steps to trace the accused,” he said. In light of the situation, heightened security measures, including patrols and checkpoints, have been implemented across the city. Senior officials from outside the district have also been brought in to ensure law and order.

“Law and order will be strictly maintained across the city,” assured the Commissioner.
