Mangaluru, Apr 18, 2026: Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao on Friday criticised the Union government over the defeat of the Women’s Reservation Bill, alleging that it attempted to mislead people in the name of women.
Centre Accused of Misleading on Women’s Reservation
Speaking to reporters in Mangaluru, Rao said no one is opposed to women’s reservation and recalled that the bill introduced in 2023 was supported unanimously.
He said there is no connection between women’s reservation and constituency delimitation. “If 33% reservation is given in the existing 224 Assembly constituencies, we have no objection. We welcome such a decision,” he said.
Rao alleged that the Centre was trying to retain power in the name of women by linking the issue with delimitation, which could create serious concerns for southern states. “This attempt to hold power in the name of women has now failed. This is a conspiracy by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP,” he added.
‘Bypoll Result Uncertain, Party Matters Internal’
Responding to concerns about a possible Congress defeat in the Davanagere South by-election, Rao said election results cannot be predicted. “No one knows what the result will be. I am not an astrologer,” he said.
He clarified that certain actions taken within the party regarding anti-party activities have no connection with election outcomes. Dismissing speculation, he said senior leader B.Z. Zameer Ahmed Khan continues to work sincerely for the party and rumours about his removal from the minister’s post are baseless.
He added that such matters are discussed within the party framework and maintained that there is no question of targeting anyone in Congress. “All communities are equal in the party. If there is any wrongdoing, action will be taken,” he said.
Local Body Elections to Be Held as per Court Direction
On local body elections, Rao said the process has already begun and elections will be conducted as per High Court directions.
“Elections must be held before June as per the court order, and preparations have already started. If the court grants time till September, we will conduct them then. Otherwise, elections will be held within June,” he said.
