Mangalore wakes up to rain, thunder, lightning

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, April Mangalore woke up to rainfall, thunder, and lightening today. Although several senior citizens predicted rainfall because of the intense heat on Wednesday, people just did not expect the rain, which cooled down the atmosphere considerably. Joggers, walkers, and market-goers were the most surprised because they hadn’t even taken umbrellas to protect themselves from the rain.

The rains continued till 7:45 a.m., and considering the fact that the atmosphere is still cloudy, one might expect rains during the day too. The chances of rainfall in Karkala and Udupi are much more because of clouds and thunder in those areas.
Rainfall has been reported from suburbs and other parts of the district. On the night of Tuesday, several parts of DK had witnessed rainfall. Puttur, Belthangady, Sullia, and Bantwal had witnessed heavy rain accompanied by winds, which damaged arecanut farms in Sullia and Puttur. Sheets covering the rooftops of several homes in these areas have been blown off.

Mescom has suffered financial losses of as much as Rs. 1.5 lakh because its transmission lines and transformers have been damaged in the rain. Two electric poles collapsed in Angadipadpu at Amtadi in Bantwal, plunging the area in darkness. Electric poles have been uprooted in places such as Farangipet, Thumbe, and Ajjibettu. A mango tree fell on a house in Kenjar in Bajpe, causing damage of around Rs. 1 lakh.

MET Predictions
MET officials have predicted that the monsoons might hit Kerala either on June 1 or earlier. Monsoons will hit coastal Karnataka a week later, they predicted.

MET officials expect 96 – 104 percent rainfall this year, and a round of pre-monsoon showers are expected to hit coastal Karnataka and Kerala during this week.
