Mangalore, Dec 5, 2011: Mangalore University will organize a 3-day international conference on synthetic and structural chemistry, ICSSC 2011, on its campus from Dec 8.
Addressing reporters at a press conference held today, Prof. T. C. Shivashankar Murthy, the vice chancellor of Mangalore University, said that the conference is significant because the UN General Assembly had declared the year 2011 as the international year of chemistry during its 63rd session, held in Dec 2008.
He said that the chemistry department of the university has decided to host the international conference in commemoration of the international year of chemistry with the objective of providing a common forum for the exchange of ideas.
The 3-day event will be inaugurated on Dec 8. Prof. T. N. Guru Rao, the solid state and structural chemistry unit of IISC Bangalore, will deliver the keynote address. Prof. M. R. Gajendragad, the former vice chancellor of Kuvempu University; Dr. K. A. Suresh, the director centre for Soft Matter Research Bangalore; and Dr. P. M. Akberali, the managing director of Apotex Pharmachem India Pvt. Ltd., will be the chief guests. Prof. Murthy will preside.
Twenty experts are expected to present papers on a wide range of topics. Besides, 300 research papers will be presented orally and through posters. Over 500 delegates from industries, universities, and research institutes will participate in the event.
Prof. H. K. Fun of University of Saints in Malaysia, the internationally acclaimed crystallographer, will deliver the valedictory address. Prof. B. S. Sherigara, Prof. S. P. Hiremath, and Dr. K. J. Divakar will preside, he said.
