MLA Abhyachandra Jain urges GPs to distribute sites among poor

Mangalore, April 24, 2012 : Addressing the Mangalore Taluk Panchayat Karnataka Development Program (KDP) review meeting held on Monday, MLA Abhayachandra Jain urged GPs to distribute sites among those who lack sites before the next scheduled KDP review meeting.


ahaya He brought it to the meeting’s notice that only 20 percent progress has been made in allotting plots to the poor, adding that one of the reasons for this is lack of land in a few GPs.

Speaking on the issue, Ravichandra Nayak, the tahsildar of Mangalore, said that 3 of the 9 GPs in Suratkal do no have enough land for those who are landless. Five GPs in Mulky also do not have sufficient government land for the landless. In Moodubidri, land has been identified for the poor in 5 GPs, he added. In places where land is already identified, it is up to the GPs to convert this land into sites, provide basic infrastructure, and distribute it to the poor, he said.

Pointing out the absence of burial ground in several villages, MLA Abhayachandra Jain said that land must be identified for burial purposes in these villages.

A forest official said that saplings will be distributed among government offices and schools and urged schools requiring saplings to contact the forest department’s nursery in Padil.

An official from the sericulture department said that the government is providing financial assistance of Rs. 40 per kg of cocoon produced by farmers. Stating that farmers in Moodubidri are expressing interest in sericulture, he said that the department wants five more hectares for sericulture activities.

The block education officer (BEO) for Mangalore said that textbooks will be distributed in schools from May 15.

The social welfare officer for Mangalore said that funds have not yet been released for scholarships for children of civic workers although 112 applications have already come in.

The child development program officer for Mangalore rural reported that 34 beneficiaries have been provided financial assistance under the Udyogini Scheme. Of the 478 applications received under the Bhagyalakshmi Scheme, the office has approved 426 applications, he reported.

Speaking on the occasion, Shanmugam, the assistant executive engineer of Panchayat Engineering Division, complained that no contract is expressing interest in rejuvenating tanks in the taluk. Although 55 tanks have been identified for rejuvenation, work has begun only on 2 tanks and work on 14 tanks in under progress, he reported.
