Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, July 13, 2012: A team from the Mangalore City Corporation’s (MCC) revenue and health department inspected hostels and hotels and dismantled illegal hoardings within city limits on July 13, Friday.

The team inspected two Expert PU College Ladies Hostels belonging to Geetha Nayak and Sai Ladies Hostel near SDM Law College belonging to Subhash Shetty. Although the Expert PU College Ladies Hostels were well-maintained and clean, the students did not have any mosquito nets.

The team found that the first floor of Sai Ladies Hostel was not ventilated properly. The health officers directed the owner to ventilate the first floor properly and make sure that the staircase is well lit.

When the team raided Hotel Shanthi Sagar, they found cooks working without hand gloves; moreover, they could not even produce medical fitness certificates. The hotel preserved chapattis in an unhygienic manner and the surroundings were not kept clean. The team shut down the hotel and imposed a fine of Rs. 2000 on the owners.

Hotel Suvarna had complained to the MCC that its rear side was overflowing with drain water. In response to the complaint, MCC’s health department cleared bushes and shrubs from the rear side of the hotel and found that the hotel was guilty of releasing dirty water into the open space.

The team found that the condition in Hotel Sagar was very bad. The staff had placed cooked rice outside the kitchen and covered it with newspapers. The team imposed a fine of Rs. 2000 on the owners and sealed the hotel.

The team, however, was quite pleased with Pereira Hotel, which had built a drainage tank and pumped excess water to the main drain every now and then so that the surroundings were kept clean.

Health inspectors Babu Malan, Sushanth, Yashwanth, and Santhosh; Madhu, the environment inspector; and S. N. Bhat, the assistant health officer, formed part of the team.
