Mangalore, March 2012 : The Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) has opened two valves at the bottom of MRPL weir, owing to which the level of water in the Thumbay vented dam rose from 8.7ft to 9.5ft.
In a bid to deal with the drinking water crisis the city is currently facing, the MCC has decided to change water supply timings. The civic body is also making arrangements to distribute water through tankers to certain areas.
K. S. Linge Gowda, the assistant executive engineer, said that the civic body is drawing up plans to ration water depending on the level of water in the Thumbay dam. Currently, only 86 MLD is being supplied to the entire city, as against the 172 MLD usually supplied.
Meanwhile, MRPL, which requires 20 MLD water per day, to conduct minimum operations at the plant, says that MCC could have solved the problem better if it repaired the leak at Thumbe dam, which is causing a loss of 20 MLD water per day. He also said that MRPL has repaired the dam four times.
Currently MRPL is allowed to draw only 20 MLD water as against the 40 MLD it usually draws from its weir. However, the water stored in this weir might be enough just for 15 days.
