MCC council decides to suggest amendments to CDP

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, Dec 13, 2011 : The Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) council decided at a special session called on Dec 12 Monday to suggest to the government that it drops some of the proposed measures in the revised Comprehensive Development Plan (CDP) and make certain amendments. This decision was unanimous.

It is commonly felt that the revised CDP is against the best interests of the poor and middle class sections of society. The latest recommendations aim to making certain concessions to enable poor and middle class families to construct houses on their sites.

Some of the recommendations include cancellation of the provision providing for forceful acquisition of small private lands adjacent to township projects, removing of residential sites and commercial sites from the green belt category, disposal of applications seeking to convert sites into residential and commercial sites within 30 days, and so on.

Opposition leader Lancelot Pinto placed his view on the need to revise certain provisions of the revised CDP and received the support of corporators Navin D’Souza, Shashidhar Hegde, Sudhir Shetty, Ashok, James, Shanta, Premnath, and Mariamma Thomas.

Corporators belonging to the ruling party were not very happy when S. Appi accused them of forcing a CDP that is against the best interests of the people and in favor of only the builders. After this quarrel, the meeting was adjourned for half an hour.

Shankar Bhat, the former mayor and BJP corporator, was the only person who agreed that the revised CDP is much better than the previous one.

Dr. Harish Kumar, the commissioner of the corporation, was also present.
