Mangalore, May 9: The Karnataka Lokayukta has finally rescued the Shirady Ghat stretch, which was in a pathetic condition for the last 3 years. Justice N. Santhosh Hegde took immediate steps to see that the entire stretch got repaired as quickly as possible.
A wide range of protests, media reports, threats from social welfare workers, and political pressure had failed to make any changes to the stretch. A letter to the Lokayukta, however, changed everything. The road is now a smooth highway with no toll.

B. V. Seetharam, a senior journalist, filed a public interest litigation in the Karnataka Lokayukta accusing the principal secretary of the PWD department and the PWD minister of neglecting their duties in relation to the terrible condition of the Shirady Ghat stretch, which forms a very important link between Mangalore and Bangalore. Immediately, the stretch was given a complete face lift, and in less than five days, the stretch was in excellent condition.
The Rashtriya Heddari Ulisi Association, based in Sakleshpur, commented that the bureaucracy must be guilty of a number of crimes if a letter to the Lokayukta made them repair the road so quickly. An activist expressed hopes that Justice Hegde will expose all corruption in the highway construction and maintenance system.
