Bantwal, Mar 21, 2026: Renowned Yakshagana artist, veteran scholar of the Thenkuthittu style, and a pillar of the Dharmasthala troupe for over five decades, Surikumeru K. Govinda Bhat (85), passed away.
An extraordinary artist who dedicated nearly seven decades of his life to the stage, Govinda Bhat was known for revolutionizing Yakshagana through his mastery in footwork, dialogue delivery, and subtle (satvika) acting. He was unmatched in his ability to completely immerse himself into characters.
Born on March 22, 1940, in extreme poverty at Kodapadavu in Bantwal, his childhood was marked by hardship. He served the Dharmasthala troupe for more than 50 years. Even in his later years, his passion for the stage remained undiminished. Despite failing eyesight, his oft-quoted sentiment, “What is my life without the stage?” continues to inspire younger artists.
The respect he commanded was reflected in the words of Dharmasthala Dharmadhikari Dr. D. Veerendra Heggade, who once said, “Even if you do not perform, your presence in our troupe itself is enough.”
Govinda Bhat brought life to powerful roles such as Kaurava and Karna with his exceptional acting and dialogue delivery. His contributions ushered in a new era in Yakshagana performance.
With his passing, an era in the Yakshagana world has come to an end. Art lovers and dignitaries have expressed their condolences and prayed for his soul to rest in peace.
