Mangaluru, April 26, 2024: Despite the relentless sun and soaring temperatures, the coastal districts witnessed a commendable voter turnout during the polling day on April 26, which encompassed 14 parliamentary seats in Karnataka. Dakshina Kannada boasted a significant turnout of 77.44%, with Udupi-Chikkamagaluru not far behind at 76.06%, according to the latest reports from the Election Commission.

The surge in participation can be attributed to both the enthusiasm of first-time voters and the dedication of senior citizens, who braved the intense heat to journey to the polling stations and exercise their democratic right.

The final voter turnout figures reveal Dakshina Kannada with 77.44% (Beltangady 75.59%, Bantwal 73.69%, Puttur 75.2%, Mangaluru 73.45%, Sullia 78.35%, Moodbidiri 68.62%, Mangaluru North 69.75%, and Mangaluru South 61.81%), and Udupi with 75.80% (Karkala 78.50%, Kaup 79.03%, Kundapur 79.10%, Chikkamagaluru 69.00%, Mudigere 75.12%, Sringeri 80.20%, and Tarikere 73.20%) as of 3 pm.

Dakshina Kannada polling

Across 1,876 booths in Dakshina Kannada and 1,842 polling stations in the Udupi-Chikmagalur segment, the polling process is currently ongoing.

The Dakshina Kannada battleground is set for a tight competition between Captain Brijesh Chowta of the BJP and Padmaraj R Poojary from the Congress. In the Udupi-Chikmagalur constituency, the spotlight is on Kota Shrinivas Poojary representing the BJP and K Jayaprakash Hegde of the Congress.

However, delays surfaced due to technical glitches at a polling station in Karopady and at St. Xavier School Bejai, causing nearly a two-hour delay in polling.
