Kundapur: Fire breaks out at SLRM unit in Koteshwar; property worth lakhs damaged

Kundapur, December 22, 2025: A fire accidentally broke out at the SLRM dry waste processing unit belonging to the Koteshwar Gram Panchayat, causing damage to property worth several lakhs of rupees, in the early hours of Sunday.

The SLRM unit, located behind the Koteshwar Gram Panchayat office in the old panchayat building, has been operational for the past four to five years. The building houses commercial complexes on the lower floor, while the waste processing unit is situated on the upper floor. The fire erupted in the dry waste stored at the unit, resulting in the complete destruction of machinery, stored plastic and waste materials, and the roofing sheets of the building.

Due to the intensity of the fire, goods in a few nearby shops, including a vegetable store in the adjacent commercial complex, were also damaged, reports said.

Ayyappa devotees passing through the area in the early morning noticed the fire and immediately alerted the concerned authorities and the fire brigade. Fire personnel from Kundapur and Byndoor rushed to the spot and, after strenuous efforts, brought the blaze under control. Their timely action prevented a major disaster that could have affected nearby shops and establishments.
