Karnataka grabs several prizes at 17th NYF

Mangalore, Jan 17, 2012 : Karnataka, which hosted the 17th edition of the National Youth Festival (NYF) in the picturesque coastal town of Mangalore for the past 5 days, has bagged the first place in several competitive events such as classical vocal Hindusthani, Kuchipudi, folk song, and Sitar competitions. The young people of Karnataka have also bagged second places in competitive events such as classical vocal Carnatic, harmonium (light), table, and Bharatanatyam.

Shivani Mirajkar, the winner of the first prize in classical vocal Hindusthani, said that she has been an admirer of Lata Mangeshkar from an early age. A student of I PUC at a college in Bangalore, she said that this was her first National Youth Festival.

Mohsin Khan, who is currently pursuing a degree course in music, said that this is his second first prize at the National Youth Festival, having won the first prize for the first time in Udaipur. A resident of Dharwad, he said that his grandfather Ustad Abdul Kareem Khan taught him the basics of playing the Sitar. He also said that his father Ustad Hameed Khan and mother Farida Khan are responsible for his success.

Archana Punyesh of Bangalore won the first prize in the Kuchipudi section. She runs a Kuchipudi dance school called Jathin Nrithya Shaala, where 65 students are currently being trained.

Anil V. Ayyar of Karnataka won the first prize in the Bharatanatyam section.

Manipur, Assam, and Orissa won the first, second, and third prize, respectively, in the folk dance category.

Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra won the first, second, and third place, respectively, in the folk song category.

Kerala and Haryana, Orissa and Punjab, and Bihar and Andhra Pradesh won the first, second, and third prize, respectively, in the one-act play category.

Manipur, West Bengal, and Assam won the first, second, and third place, respectively, in the classical dance category.

Kerala, Karnataka, and West Bengal won the first, second, and third place, respectively, in the Bharatanatyam category.

Tripura, Madhya Pradesh, and West Bengal won the first, second, and third place, respectively, in the Kathak category.

Karnataka, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh won the first, second, and third place, respectively, in the Kuchipudi category.

Delhi, Orissa, and Madhya Pradesh won the first, second, and third place, respectively in the Odyssey category.

Karnataka, Chattisgarh, and West Bengal won the first, second, and third place, respectively, in the Classical Vocal Hindusthani category.

Delhi, Karnataka, and Kerala won the first, second, and third place, respectively, in the Classical Vocal Carnatic category.

Goa, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh and Karnataka won the first, second, and third place, respectively, in the Harmonium (light) category.

Delhi, Chattisgarh, and Bihar won the first, second, and third prize, respectively, in the elocution category.

West Bengal, Punjab, and Karnataka won the first, second, and third place, respectively, in the tabla category.

Kerala, Maharashtra, and Punjab won the first, second, and third prize, respectively, in the Mridangam category.

West Bengal, Chattisgarh, and Maharashtra won the first, second, and third place, respectively, in the flute category.

Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and Punjab won the first, second, and third place, respectively, in the Veena category.

Karnataka, Punjab, and Haryana won the first, second, and third prize, respectively, in the Sitar category.

Kerala, Delhi, and Maharashtra won the first, second, and third prize, respectively, in the Guitar category.
