Mangalore, Dec 12: Kadri Kambala, an event of historic significance, was inaugurated in the fields set aside for the purpose in Kadri on the morning of Dec 12, Sunday.
The Kambala is being organized by Kambala Samithi and was inaugurated by the ritual honoring of buffaloes by the head of the family of Kadri Kambala Guttu in the august presence of Kadri Yogishwara Mutt Seer Mahantharasa Rajayogi Sadyanathji.
A coconut was then ritualistically broken by Shree Devi Educational Institutions Chairman Sadananda Shetty. The people of Tulunadu traditionally break a coconut before undertaking any auspicious work. Shetty said in his inaugural address that participating in the Kambala not only enhances physical strength, but also boosts intellect. He also urged everybody present to cooperate with such event.
Senior banker P. Jayaram Bhat was the chief guest of the event. Addressing the audience, he said that the race held in the slushy field is a meaningful rural sport. Paddy growers celebrate the annual harvest with the Kambala and the slushy field is the place where food is grown. He lamented the fact that modern children are unaware of rural entertainment.
District-in-charge Minister J. Krishna Palemar inaugurated the women’s tug-of-war. MP Kumar Kateel inaugurated the Tulunada Tappangai contest.
The buffalo race began at noon, and buffalos were brought from the district and its surrounding regions. The race has several categories as per the capacity of the buffaloes.
A few foreigners also witnessed the historic event and said that they were happy to witness this historic, traditional, and cultural event. They also said that coastal Karnataka is a unique place because of its rich cultural history. They also applauded when they saw children below the age of 12 participating in the buffalo race.
DK Kannada Sahitya Parishad President Pradeep Kumar Kalkura, Lion K. J. Devadiga, Shivanand Karkera, and Bhaskar Shetty were present.
Kambala Samithi Chief Convener Kadri Navneeth Shetty conducted the event.
