Housing construction stalled in DK: Ivan D’Souza urges Minister to hold review meeting

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru, Aug 28, 2025: Housing construction under the Housing Department has slowed down in Dakshina Kannada district over the past five years. The government should release a white paper on this issue, and the Housing Minister must visit Mangaluru to hold a departmental progress review meeting to resolve the technical hurdles in housing projects, demanded MLC Ivan D’Souza.

Addressing a press conference at the Mangaluru City Corporation office on Thursday, he said that during the Assembly session, he had raised 45 questions covering various public issues and discussed the government’s responses. He further urged the district administration to hold an adalat (grievance redressal forum) regarding housing projects.

Banks are not sanctioning loans for beneficiaries, and beneficiaries themselves are not paying their share of the amount. This deadlock has stalled housing construction. Those living in rented houses are also unable to obtain consent letters from landlords, due to which property title deeds are not being issued, he explained.

The government has also assured that a separate tourism policy will be implemented for the coastal region. Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar will soon convene a meeting in Mangaluru with ministers in charge of the three coastal districts, MLAs, and officials to discuss tourism development. A cabinet meeting is also likely to be held in Mangaluru in November, he added.

Ivan further urged that AI cameras be installed across Mangaluru city by the City Corporation and traffic police. This, he said, would help curb crimes, ease traffic congestion, and ensure smooth movement.

On the occasion, Ivan D’Souza distributed cheques worth ₹5.19 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund to various beneficiaries.

Leaders Shashidhar Hegde, Naveen D’Souza, Bhaskar, Prem Ballalbagh, Meena Tellis, and others were present.
