Mudipu, June 12, 2012 : Harekala Hajabba, an illiterate orange vendor, successfully built a high school for the children of the locality and is now dreaming of constructing a pre-university college.
The children of Harekala and Nyuupadpu in DK had to travel a long distance for high school because they did not have a high school in their locality. Although the government had sanctioned a high school, there was no building. Hajabba sought the assistance of private donors and the government and constructed a high school in the locality.
Hajabba told DH that he wants to start a government PU college and has already submitted a memorandum to the chief minister and the MLAs regarding this. Stating that the government had sanctioned a high school for the existing primary school in 2007 – 08, the high school had no building of its own. The high school classes were being held in the primary school classrooms and three batches of students completed their high school in the primary school building itself.
Now that the high school has its own building, 130 students are studying there and the building will be inaugurated on June 14, he said, adding that MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, ZP President Shailaja Bhat, MLA U. T. Khader, and many others will take part in this event.
The school in Nyupadpu has an interesting history. Hajabba was the president of the local Jamaath when they started the first standard in the madrasa. Since they had no funds, the little school was on the verge of being shut down, but Hajabba began raising funds and providing the required facilities to the school. He took the help of MLA U. T. Fareed, raised funds, and succeeded in purchasing land for a school building.
Today, the school is not only a primary school, but also a high school. Located on 1.19 acres of land, the high school has six teachers.
