Bengaluru, Jun 14, 2026: Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Sunday clarified that the Congress government’s flagship guarantee schemes, Gruha Lakshmi and Gruha Jyothi, will not be discontinued and urged the public not to believe rumours being spread by opposition parties.

In a statement, Shivakumar said the two schemes were a matter of pride for the government and would continue without interruption.

"Gruha Lakshmi and Gruha Jyothi are the pride of the Congress government. They will not be stopped under any circumstances. People should not pay heed to the false information being spread by the opposition," he said.

The clarification came a day after the Chief Minister announced that beneficiaries of both schemes would be required to submit fresh applications following the detection of several irregularities, including benefits being availed in the names of deceased persons and other ineligible beneficiaries.

Shivakumar said some individuals had created fake records using the names of deceased persons to claim benefits under the schemes. The reapplication process, he explained, was intended only to verify and authenticate beneficiaries’ details, including their names, addresses and bank account information.

On Saturday, after a review meeting with Deputy Commissioners, Superintendents of Police and other senior officials, Shivakumar had revealed that nearly Rs 100 crore under the Gruha Lakshmi scheme had been disbursed to beneficiaries who were no longer alive.

He had also said that fresh applications would be sought from beneficiaries of the Gruha Jyothi scheme, which provides up to 200 units of free electricity and covers around 1.64 crore consumers. According to him, cases had been found where multiple electricity meters were registered under a single name and some beneficiaries were using the subsidy for commercial establishments.

The government plans to issue identity cards to verified beneficiaries of both schemes as part of the verification exercise, he added.
