Mangalore, Sep 25, 2012 : Speaking at the Karnataka Development Programs Review Meeting at the Taluk Panchayat on Monday, District-in-charge Minister C. T. Ravi said that the state government has to identify ways to make sure that anganwadi centres, hostels, and schools serving mid-day meals to children will continue getting subsidized LPG.

The minister was responding to complaints from officials concerned that the cap on subsidized LPG is applicable to schools and anganwadis too. The DC, who was also present, confirmed that the district administration has obtained a letter stating that the cap on subsidized LPCs is applicable even to hostels, schools, and anganwadis.

Expressing his concerns over the issue, the minister said that cap on subsidized LPG for schools and anganwadis will seriously affect the students. He also assured that the state government will discuss the issue and make sure that the recently imposed cap will not affect schools and anganwadis in any way.

The minister also ordered that atrocity cases must be filed against officers in Mangalore Taluk Social Welfare Department, who stand accused of misappropriating Ganga Kalyana Yojana funds. Strict action must be taken against those who did not implement this project for the benefit of SC/ST people, he added.

Speaking on the occasion, Mangalore’s child development project officer said that of the 228 functional anganwadis in Mangalore, only 63 have their own buildings and the others function from rented buildings and makeshift arrangements. Although 11 sites have been identified to construct buildings for the anganwadis, the CDPO has not received the MCC’s permission to start building, he complained.

Responding to the issue, the minister directed Dr. K. Harish Kumar, commissioner of Mangalore City Corporation (MCC), to start identifying more land for anganwadis.

In response to complaints regarding sale of illicit licquor in Mangalore, the minister directed the excise department to shut down all illegal outlets and shops.
