Udupi, March 7, 2026: The Census of India 2027 will be conducted in a completely digital format for the first time in the country, with a self-enumeration option also available, said Udupi District Commissioner Swarup T.K.
He was speaking while presiding over a preparatory meeting for the census held at the Deputy Commissioner’s office conference hall in Manipal on Friday.

The District Commissioner said that the first phase of the exercise, involving house listing operations, will be carried out for 30 days beginning April 16. The second phase, which involves population enumeration, will commence in February 2027.
Swarup T.K. said that, in accordance with government guidelines, the required officials and staff must be appointed to carry out the census operations. Mobile applications and a central portal will be used for house listing, data collection, verification and monitoring.
He directed officials to take necessary steps to appoint staff for the house listing process and instructed them to finalise trainers for the census, conduct training for district census officers and prepare the final list of field workers.
The District Commissioner also stressed the need to complete GPS-based mapping and ensure that all preparatory work is carried out within the stipulated time. He added that all departments must work in coordination to ensure the smooth conduct of the census.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Abid Gadyal, District Panchayat Planning Director Udaykumar Shetty, Assistant Commissioner Rashmi, Municipal Commissioner Mahantesh Hangaragi and officials from various departments were present at the meeting.
