Udupi, June 30: The Central Excise Department confiscated a parcel of 18 gold biscuits weighing 1800gms, which a jeweler based in Udupi had sent by bus on June 29, Tuesday.
Suresh Shet, the jeweler who owns the gold, claimed that he had purchased 20 gold biscuits of 100gms each, weighing a total of 2kgs and worth Rs 36 lakh, from Micro International Bangalore. On June 22, he had parceled the gold via Durgamba Motors because carrying it on his person was risky. One of his associates was also travelling by the same bus.
However, when the bus reached Udupi, he found that the gold biscuits were stolen and replaced with stones. He immediately lodged a complaint at the Sheshadripuram police station. As soon as the culprit came to know about this, he parceled the gold biscuits to Rajashree Enterprises, which belongs to the Shet. However, when he opened the parcel, he found only 18 biscuits there instead of 20.
The customs officials instructed the police to seize the biscuits and hold them in custody till the matter was fully investigated. The customs officials informed journalists that they wanted to investigate whether the gold was smuggled or whether taxes were being paid on it.
